Bad Things Happen
May 14, 2004
Welcome to Change Your
World!
Hello. My name is
Courtney Huntington, and I am the founder of Change Your World.
Creating change in our
lives doesn't mean that we will never make mistakes or deal with people
who mistreat us. We may want peace at all times, but that doesn't mean
that we will have peace at all times, nor does it mean that we will be
peacable at all times. It's possible to deny that bad things happen,
but only if we are in denial.
When bad things happen,
we must maintain a positive mental attitude (PMA). This means that we
don't let the situation throw us off balance. If we've done something
wrong, we start immediately to set it right. If we've been wronged, we
admit the damage and we gladly forgive when asked. Bearing grudges does
no one any good.
The phrase "positive
mental attitude" has been widely misunderstood. To some, it is by
definition a denial of negative circumstances or, in other words, a
claim that bad things don't
happen.
W. Clement Stone had a
different view of PMA. He said, "A Positive Mental Attitude is the right honest thought, action, or
reaction to a given situation or set of circumstances, i.e., thoughts,
actions, and reactions which do not violate the laws of God or the
right of your fellow man, for those who have PMA" (Michael J. Ritt,
Jr., Napoleon Hill's Keys to
Positive Thinking). A positive mental attitude is by this
definition directly opposed to denying bad things happen. Having PMA
only means responding with the right attitude.
When we face difficult
circumstances, PMA doesn't deny that they're difficult; it merely
responds to the difficulty with the appropriate thought and action.
With many blessings and
wishes for successful positive change,
Courtney Huntington
