Managing Change

May 11, 2005

Over the past year, I have undergone numerous changes in my life. During the time since my last Message (July 31, 2004), I took a long hiatus from writing. I was conducting an experiment—perhaps I should say, series of experiments.

I tried to do something I'd never done before: Commissioned Sales. I was great at first, then not so great. I loved it, and I hated it. I had the time of my life, and I had the worst time of my life.

Among my friends, commissioned sales is viewed by many to be something you do only if there's nothing else you can do—a last resort. It's considered to be a lower form of occupation. Not only did I take a commissioned sales job, however, but I took a commissioned sales job in—gasp!—insurance (nooooo!). Facing such negative criticism was my first big challenge, and I confess it's one I am still working to overcome.

My wife has seen some bad things happen with commissioned sales in her experience, and so I had to work hard to overcome her objections. She was very supportive from start to finish, but she wasn't convinced for a long time that that's where I needed to be. Then, about the time she became convinced it was a great opportunity, I began to have my doubts.

So why did I choose commissioned sales? Why did I choose the company I chose? What were my goals? And what did I learn? Well, that's what next week is for. Check back then to hear how this experience changed my life for the better.

With many blessings and wishes for successful positive change,
